Wolf was participating in an annual tour when he was struck and
killed by vehicle, which apparently was beginning a left turn and
did not see Wolf. The accident is the typical of drivers not looking
for cyclists.
"Sam was the poster boy for being cautious.
He would never even take his bike out of the yard without a helmet," said
a friend of Wolf's. "He was fastidious about making sure
everything was all right mechanically….He was always busy,
always doing for other people. He was a great role model for
anybody. Sam had been an avid bicycle rider since he was in high
school.”
In September 2006, two bicyclists were killed and
three others were injured in a crash in Vermillion County near
the Indiana-Illinois border during a charity bike ride for
Indiana Concerns of Police Survivors, a 1,100-mile ride around
the state to raise money for families of slain officers. The accident
occurred 50 miles north of Terre Haute, Ind., on Indiana 63. Investigators
said a motorist hit the cyclists' support van and crashed it
into the riders. [read
